See-through

Dressed in all white, the future
gave you back. You and David Byrne clutching
the grain of the bar, making
feelings from plastic figurines.

You want to train your mind.
Write a list of secrets
to share with the world.

How many versions of
happiness involve cutting it
up like a turkey?

Do you see her freckles tattooed
on your forearm when
you toss at night?

Do you wish you were
in the snow
with the absence of sound?

You’re naked, and that’s not new,
with word after word
of consciousness more and more
completely on your skin.

The letters that you can’t get rid of
sculpted larger than anyone you’ve ever met
and set on fire.

Your face spread open
like a salt flat
so we can see through
what comes.

December 31, 2016

One of my favorite Texas surprises is that fruit trees grow in front yards. On a particularly glorious November afternoon, I passed a family harvesting their orange tree, filling several baskets with plump fruit. I waved, complimented the tree, and without hesitation the mother grabbed two oranges and brought them down to me at the fence.
A man, who seemed to be the caretaker of the household, gave her a comment about not giving me so many. She rushed backed and stuffed my arms until I couldn’t carry another fruit.
I politely accepted two and walked home laughing. The women was so determinedly giving! Even with the miserly man trying to close her off to the world, albiet with a type of protective love.
I went home and ate the oranges in a row, because they were easily the best in my life, being careful to save all the seeds.

Here are the most promising future trees. Destiny’s darlings. I’m dreaming 20 years from now of giving away oranges, oranges and oranges. A century from now one of them outliving me and the women.
Love makes more love. It doesn’t run out. Give as much as you can. Happy New Years everyone

Transported back home to Colombia after 3 full months in Europe. I’ll be making a mural here dealing with ideas of global connectedness and having multiple communities in the world. To be displayed at the #senseIIIpopupsensorial curated by @humanese. Excited to collaborate with this inspiring group of creatives from Medellin!

Gezelligheid

“Gezellig” is a gem in the dutch language with no english equivalent. It can loosely mean “cozy” but in a more robust way describes a range of feelings of connectedness paired with a sense of individual well being.

It even has its own Wikipedia article:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gezelligheid

On my last day in Amsterdam, I tucked into the coziest cafe I could find, with atmospheric music, light hearted banter, and a welcoming girl on the other side of the bar who was pulling banana bread out of the oven while describing to me where to watch outdoor art house films. I stayed for several hours sipping tea until the sun stopped reaching through the corner window. Gezellig!

Shifting my style of travel

Book a place that sounds interesting. Download the lonely planet using kindle unlimited. Book 2 nights in a hostel, and 2 nights in an Airbnb. Pack the bare minimum. Read the lonely planet on the plane. Pick 2 touristy things you want to do. Befriend someone at the hostel the first night or on the walking tour. Go on do your tourist circuit.

Check into the airbnb and get comfortable. Forget anything else on your list that you missed. Spend the last two days them the coziest most bohemian cafes and get completely loaded up on tea. Walk around. Sit on benches. Skim through books. Talk to people like you live there. Stumble into local events. Bring a notebook and let the thoughts flow. Spend hours trying to reach “the moment”. Enjoy the peace for as long as possible. If you booked a second location spend a few hours the last night recording your field notes. Download your photos. Thank the people you met.

I’ve recently finished a new USA scratch map in time for road trip season! With all the national parks, highest peaks, interstates and lots of other details that I spent way too much time on.

I’ve road tripped, taken the train and bicycled across the USA. I’m still hoping I’ll get to do a national parks tour in a camper van one day!

This is my morning tree. What seems to be hundreds of birds live in there as if their own apartment building.

I plan my day in their cacophony. My brain feels as noisy as the soundscape with thoughts competing for attention. Projects. Businesses. Ideas. Studies. Appointments. Futurethink.

I take a half hour here to plan how I’ll spend the waking day. I dread flapping and circling in an anxious overdose of freedom.

Thousands of miles away from where I was born and another thousand miles away from where I grew up, I find it strange that a perch like this can feel like home. I’ve been here long enough, to feel like I’ve been here forever, which is not that long at all. I’m flexing my strongest muscle. To adapt. To use a horizon of unstructured free time.

Some days my plans fit perfectly with what I need, and I glide effortlessly. Others, I’m wrestling a headwind, or give up after whimpering a few hours in. All the more frustrating when I picked out what I wanted out of that noisy tree. That green storm, existing between towers of order.

Salento’s wax palms make fools of all other trees. I took an 8 hour bus ride to see them.

It’s my second visit and it was a completely different experience from the first. It reminds me that there are no repeat experiences - if only because personal perspective is constantly shifting giving you a new angle. Along with the people around you who are in the same state of flux and contributing to your vision.

At the hostel, I briefly felt like I was starting to be *the old guy*. Although it’s hard to feel old with trees that have been reaching to the sky for centuries soaring over you.

“I used to want to design a utopic society, or a perfect world or something like that. But as I’m getting older I’m realizing that my idea of a perfect world really can’t be designed by one person or even by a million experts. It’s really going to be 7 billion pairs of hands, each following their own passions, and each kind of like a mosaic, coming up and creating this world in their backyards and in their kitchens. And that’s a world I really want to live in.” - Jay Silver

Shibuya 12:30am-5:00am

Shibuya has one of the busiest intersections in the world. After the last train at 12:30 am it transforms. If you miss that last train like me, you’ll join a few hundred others for the all-night wait until the first train at 5am.

Some people are there on purpose drinking through the night. Others have to let the immediate shock set through to start planning their evening. Take a look around. The people you see will be recurring characters. There is a foreigner playing an untuned guitar. A man digging through trash. Another with a red suit chatting up everyone. One girl waiting impatiently in front of the Starbucks.

All the usual Japanese decorum is gone. Cigarette smoke everywhere. Skateboarders claiming their territory. People scurrying into clubs. Others into ramen joints. Business suits go into members only bars. Younger executives puking on the street after lame attempts at speaking English. A few wanderers that take the same circular walk as you.

4 am and finally the perfect 24 hr cafe. Only whispers. Aromatic tea. A serious looking man is thinking and writing in fits. Maybe a novel.

Remember that Murakami book where the main character also misses the last train and the entire plot line is in these hours?

The next day when the millions return, you’ll feel a new belonging, having known the streets in their intimate hours.

San Francisco Profiles

Reading this article two years ago affirmed my decision to spend large stints of time in SF. I remember feeling at home in the “creative mindfunless” free-flowing style of SF that Nathan Heller represents in this feature. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/10/14/bay-watched

Although this more recent piece, titled “California Screaming”, reveals a more grim picture of the rent struggles http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/07/07/california-screaming

My last stint in SF was this past january, so I’ll have to see for myself what’s changed when I arrive in a few short weeks.

Today I’m at this atmospheric cafe, one of many in Saigon, enjoying a Sunday reading and brainstorm session in the company of a pizza paired with a cappuccino. Xin chao from Vietnam!

Also next week, Natalia plays in Bogota’s “Estereo Picnic Festival”. The coachella of colombia… jajaja

Even more exciting, Natalia’s version is a duet with the Venezuelan/American singer Devendra Banhart Here is the original Augustin Lara for reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYnwxy4kIg

This past weekend I got to explore this beautiful abandoned train station in Medellin, Colombia. (The full set of photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahhfred/sets/72157642936520544/)

I was having dinner with a few expats the night before, and a colombian student in a photography class was nice enough to invite me on her class photo-excursion. It was saturday morning, and to be honest, I considered bailing on the idea since I was beat from a night of salsa dancing, but nevertheless,it’s these random opportunities that you must seize.

For the next time, I’m hoping to setup a photoshoot at this location with a model and some sort of conceptual visual ideas. The location is spectacular, and needs some other concepts and imagery to really put it over the edge for me.

HBX launch

Usually, I don’t announce my work projects with Clearway Design, which is silly because it’s been a part of my life since I was in High School. Perhaps at some point, I’ll reveal all the iterations and evolution of the Clearway Design site.

This week, we’ve had the biggest launch to date. For most of 2013, clearway design was engaged as a consultant on the interface for the Harvard Business School online classes, named “HBX”.

Building and setting up interfaces is second nature to me now, and it was exciting to culminate all my skills and experience from the past decade to quickly lead the setup for the frontend configuration and build a responsive interface.

Although some people don’t like consulting, I find it incredibly interesting and rewarding. You get to learn from the client, and share all your experience from past clients. It’s like being a pollinating bee in the tech world spreading knowledge and experience from place to place. Perhaps though, I’ve been lucky to always work with standup people.

HBX is already receiving positive press. Here is a Boston Globe article: http://b.globe.com/1pgTVJl
Wishing the team lots of continued success, and interested to watch this grow.

Discovery from an internet foray

I took a moment to skim through the 500+ messages people have sent me about using my tumblr themes (First of all, apologies in advance that I can not respond to each of you - I’d love to help but it’s too much!)

One question was from “Stoic Mike” who describes himself as an “ancient tumblr” . Out of corousity I browsed through his blog and found these delightful collages with captions that he makes. Check them out! http://stoicmike.tumblr.com/

I’m constantly overwhelmed by the internet especially since it’s my workspace. But here and there it’s lovely to go on a foray and then dig deeper into someone’s stream as if a traveler taking pause.

There are now 17,000 people who installed this theme. The most frequently asked question I’m getting is:

How do I add my portrait in the about me section? Under Appearance, check the box that says “show portrait”.

It’s been about two weeks since I released the free tumblr theme Serifs & Scribbles.

 • Installs after 3.5 weeks: 11,155
 • New tumblr followers: 130

Advice from one of my heroes

I met with one of my heroes, Derek Sivers, for breakfast last week (Thanks to my little brother!). Derek is a super passionate person and an entrepreneur who gets it. He brings a humanity to business that shows he cares about people first, and business second. After working on his company for over a decade, he gave it away to charity realizing that the money wouldn’t make him happy, and might conversely be harmful. On top of all of this, Derek is incredibly personable and good conversation.

Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite advice from Derek (morphed a bit for my own application). I’m working to put a lot this content below into my process. Mostly the bits about producing more to get better and starting to define my focus.

I know exactly what I did 28 days ago

In an effort to be more mindful and have a record of how I’m spending my days, I’ve been keeping a new journal. The template for it is simple and requires me to write a few categorized lists of what I have to show for my day.
The current breakdown looks like this:

-what was the most important thing about today
feeling: morning, afternoon, evening
reading:
music:

Ideas:
Business:
Personal:
Thanks:
More:

In the evening, I can run through filling it out in 5 minutes. I use http://www.evernote.com/ and create a new note for each day.

A few interesting things that have come from this so far:

1) Searchability. Evernote has great search functionality so I can do something like lookup the word “lazy” or “excited” and find out exactly which days of the week I was feeling that way.

2) “Thanks” – The thanks section is something I added during my second week. It consists of specific details that I enjoyed about my day. Ever since I added this, I’ve been much more aware of transient moments that I’m getting a kick out of (“the sound of a ball hitting a fence”). I had a conversation with a friend about this who was telling me every since she started her blog, she’s had “blog-o-vision” and has been framing her world to fit into that format. I feel like something similar is happening with this “thanks” section where I’ve been enjoying details more since I’m actively looking for them.

I’m 54 entries in with this journal. Right now, I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to be doing with all the data but I’m hoping to be able to identify some patterns with another couple months of entries. In the short term, the process is helping me be more aware of how I’m spending my time on a daily basis.

If these things came to pass they would recount how Kino looked and what he said and how his eyes shone, and they would say “He was a man transfigured. Some power was given to him, and there it started. You see what a great man he has become, starting from that moment. And I myself saw it.”

And if Kino’s planning came to nothing, those same neighbors would say, “There it started. A foolish madness came over him so that he spoke foolish words. God Keep us from such things. Yes, God punished Kino because he rebelled against the way things are. You see what has become of him. And I myself saw the moment when reason left him.

We all need someone to look at us. We can be divided into four categories according to the kind of look we wish to live under.

The first category longs for the look of an infinite number of anonymous eyes, in other words, the look of the public…

The second category is made up of people who have a vital need to be looked at by many known eyes. They are the tireless hosts of cocktail parties and dinners. They are happier than the people in the first category, who, when they lose their public, they have the feeling that the lights have gone out in the room of their lives…

Then there is the third category, the category of people who need to be constantly before the eyes of the person they love. Their situation is as dangerous as the situation of people in the first category…

And finally there is the fourth category, the rarest, the category of people who live in the imaginary eyes of those who are not present. They are the dreamers…

Like all men of the Library, I have traveled in my youth; I have wandered in search of a book, perhaps the catalogue of catalogues; now that my eyes can hardly decipher what I write, I am preparing to die just a few leagues from the hexagon in which I was born.

New blog

I decided to get out of http://www.pixelpost.org/ since I want to do more than pictures now. If your interested in doing a photo only blog I highly recommend it as a platform. I designed this theme for it.

I plan on making my own theme for tumblr once I have the time.

A little optimism during swine flu madness in Mexico City (on top of that, there was a small earthquake this morning too). We’ll get through this Mexico!

Thanks Colleen for helping me chase this guy down! Also, see Alexis and Deanna for some proper documentation of the happenings.

Red Dress

Guanajuato is a magical city. Around every tight corner is a completely different type of scenery. It’s a beautiful puzzle and is one of my favorite places that I’ve ever been.

Every Sunday morning the city closes down lanes and entire streets for bikes and pedestrians only. They create a loop going through the center and south of the city. The last Sunday of each month is an extended loop called the Cicloton which is about 32km (~20 mile).

This is absolutely one of my favorite things about D.F.

This is the studio of the sculptor Javier Marin. A couple of us got a nice guided tour by our friend Miguel who works with him constructing gigantic resin statues with the figures posed classically - a sight of its own.
